Availability of cryogenic gaseous and liquid nitrogen are critical to many areas of technology today. Lack of availability can completely disrupt many types of operations—from semiconductor fabrication to drug discovery research. To address this problem, Rigaku has developed self-contained systems—for providing cryogenic (temperature regulated) nitrogen gas and/or liquid nitrogen—using only air, electricity, and cooling water.

Rigaku cryogenics for X-ray crystallography

Both macromolecular and small molecule crystallographers employ cryo-cooling of crystals to enhance data quality. This technique requires both a cryogenic nitrogen gas stream to cool crystals during the X-ray exposure and a supply of liquid nitrogen (LN2) in which to flash cool and store crystals. Traditionally, these requirements were fulfilled by maintaining an inventory if LN2 dewars which could be subject to availability problems.

Rigaku offer a product that eliminates the need for crystallographers to have access to a supply of liquid nitrogen. The award winning Rigaku X-stream 2000 low temperature system provides a temperature regulated laminar flow stream of cryogenic nitrogen gas.
