Confocal Max-Flux®
The best performing conventional two dimensional beam conditioning optic available today, the Rigaku Confocal Max-Flux has been recognized as the most significant advancement in protein crystallography of the last decade. By utilizing two laterally graded multilayer optics in a side-by-side arrangement, this new design has improved on all the parameters of the previous optical arrangement used for manipulating a X-ray beam in two dimensions.
Side-by-side geometry solves problems inherent to traditional optical schemes by arranging the Confocal Max-Flux multilayer mirrors at the most appropriate location for optimized optical performance. This results in quicker and easier beam alignment along with increased flux and greatly decreased background. For macromolecular (protein) crystallography, decreased beam divergence afforded by the Confocal Max-Flux design produces higher quality data sets for improved molecular structure resolution.
The latest generation of Confocal Max-Flux optics designed for protein crystallography are the VariMax™ models.
