Saturn 724+ CCD detector

The new Rigaku Saturn 724+ is the next generation of CCD camera for small molecule crystallography. Incorporating the newest and most sophisticated Kodak® CCD chip, the Saturn 724+ provides a new dimension in data quality, with a very fast readout speed, a large active area and broad dynamic range.

Perform rapid data collection

With the largest active area and fastest readout of any comparable small molecule CCD X-ray area detector, the Saturn 724+ is the perfect tool for fast data collection. The 4-port readout, with a total digitization speed of 8 MHz, delivers maximum data in minimal time.

Produce highest quality datasets

Optimized for molybdenum (Mo) radiation, the larger aperture of the Saturn 724+ enables collection of higher resolution data, with greater redundancy, at a given crystal-to-detector distance. The advanced full-frame CCD employed by the Saturn 724+ uses a proprietary 2-phase architecture and has high capacity pixels for extended dynamic range. With its 18-bit analog-to-digital (ADC) processing architecture, the Saturn 724+ is ideal for accurately measuring weak reflections.

To increase the sensitivity of the sensor, one of the two polysilicon gates was replaced with the transparent conductor indium-tin-oxide (ITO). Thus the design of the chip eliminates the need to resort to backside illumination and provides the intrinsically superior dark current characteristics needed to generate the highest quality data.

  • Advanced Kodak KAF-4320E CCD sensor
  • Front-illuminated ITO technology for superior sensitivity
  • Large 72 mm x 72 mm (102 mm diagonal) image area
  • 2084 x 2084 pixel array with 4-port readout
  • Fast 2 MHz per port (8 MHz total) readout speed
  • 17,000:1 dynamic range, the highest of any comparable detector
  • 18-bit analog-to-digital converter
  • Read out times as low as 0.24 seconds per image (binned mode)
  • Demagnification ratio of 1.46:1
  • Reliable closed loop Joule-Thompson cooling system (no water required)
  • Full sampling of reciprocal spaces with a 3-axis or 4-axis goniometer
  • Supported by CrystalClear™ and HKL-2000®

Publish more high-quality structures faster

For maximum throughput, the Saturn 724+ may be equipped, as a complete Saturn CCD System, using the brilliant MicroMax-007 HF microfocus rotating anode X-ray generator and the world's only sample handling automation system for small molecule crystallography, the ACTOR™ SM.
